Shower door glass care in Kansas City means a simple routine of daily squeegeeing, periodic cleaning with glass-safe solutions, and an optional protective coating to fight hard-water buildup. Westport Glass recommends this approach to keep tempered shower glass clear, spot-free, and looking new for years in the metro's mineral-rich water. We recommend Diamond Fusion protective coating which typically adds $300–$500 to a Kansas City shower installation and is the most effective way to keep glass clear long-term, since mineral buildup releases instead of etching permanently.
With a basic two-minute daily routine, you can prevent the hard-water etching that becomes permanent within months on untreated glass, so consistent care costs almost nothing but protects the look and value of your enclosure.
"Kansas City water is hard, and it's the number-one enemy of clear shower glass. Squeegee after every shower and you'll avoid most of the buildup we get calls about," says Brian Dugan, Fourth-Generation Co-Owner of Westport Glass & Mirror.
Squeegee your glass dry after showering. It takes less than a minute and goes a long way in preventing the buildup of soap and mineral deposits that create water spots. This is the best preventative tool against water spots.
Clean your glass periodically with proper cleaning solutions that will not harm glass. Westport Glass recommends Sprayway Glass Cleaner as a great solution for glass, mirror, and metal.
Purchase Diamond Fusion Protective Coating with your shower — typically $300–$500 added to your installation. It makes the glass easier to clean and resistant to staining. The most important benefit is that if mineral buildup accumulates, it comes off rather than causing permanent damage as with standard glass.
NEVER use abrasive powders, abrasive pads, steel wool, or any cleaner containing bleach or ammonia. These strong chemicals harm the glass, corrode your door hardware, and compromise the silicone and seals, which creates leaks. All glass is porous, so protect your glass.
Cleaning shower door hardware is easy. Use a few drops of a mild soap such as dishwashing liquid in warm water, wipe with a soft microfiber or terrycloth towel, and rinse well. Remember that handles, towel bars, and hinges are not designed to support your weight, that's what grab bars are for.
Maintaining the seals IS IMPORTANT, as they help contain water. Sweeps and seals are replaceable components. Westport will repair or replace faulty hardware, including sweeps and seals, at no additional charge for one year from installation, subject to the published warranty terms and exclusions. After the warranty period, replacement vinyls and sweeps can be purchased from Westport, with installation available for an additional service charge. To extend their life, clean them as you would your hardware, using mild soap and warm water. Do not use bleach, ammonia, or any strong chemical, which will make the seals brittle and discolored.
The bottom sweep takes the brunt of the friction wear. Keep it as clean as possible and consider a thin coat of petroleum jelly to keep it soft and extend its life. In climates with significant seasonal changes, your shower door opening can expand and contract slightly, making a perfectly installed seal less effective over time. The good news is that seals are easily replaced, relatively inexpensive, and available at Westport Glass.
Use this side-by-side to keep your shower glass clear:
Squeegee the glass dry after every shower and clean it periodically with a glass-safe cleaner like Sprayway. A Diamond Fusion protective coating adds further resistance to Kansas City's hard water.
Light buildup on coated glass usually wipes away, but deep etching on untreated glass is often permanent. Daily squeegeeing is far more effective than trying to restore damaged glass.
Never use abrasive powders, pads, steel wool, or any cleaner with bleach or ammonia. These corrode hardware and make seals brittle, which can cause leaks.
Seals are wear items, like windshield wipers, so timing varies with use and climate, and keeping them clean extends their life. Faulty sweeps and seals are repaired or replaced at no additional charge for one year from installation. After that period, replacement vinyls and sweeps can be purchased from Westport, with installation available for an additional service charge.
